Food Review: Nam Heong Ipoh Located At The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

Talking about the wonders of Malaysia when it comes to food, I think Nam Heong Ipoh should be in the list to try authentic Malaysian cuisines. Today, lets try this restaurant and find out how was it:

THE FOOD:

We ordered their Signature Steamed Chicken Rice, Crispy Roasted Pork Belly Rice, Supreme Prawn Noodles, Ipoh Signature Bean Sprout, Vintage Nan Yang Coffee , Honey Lemon tea, and Supreme BBQ Pork Bun.

We ordered their food through an online platform since its not advisable for us to get around --we have kids with us.

Anyway, lets start with their Signature Steamed Chicken Rice. The steamed chicken was not as I expected. I would say it a bit dry and the way the chicken was sliced need improvement. Compared to other chicken rice shop in town, the steamed chicken should be moist with a little combination of liquid (oil/sauce) that makes it soft . In terms of taste, the savoury level is there and I admit it is nice in my palate though.

The roasted pork is crispy and the savoury taste is strong which make my taste buds enjoy every bite. The salt level as well as the savoury taste of the chicken rice didn’t overpower the entire authenticity of the dish. The skin of the pork is crispy and it was not burnt. The only thing which I think it must improve is on the way the pork was sliced. It could have been better if it was sliced in a little bit of smaller bite size.

The supreme Prawn Noodle is one of a kind that I think good for spicy food lovers out there. The combination of prawn, boiled eggs, as well as those other elements blends well with the spicy prawn soup. The prawn broth is not salty which make the dish authentic. I would say the noodle are tender and very springy which makes it nice in my palate.

Their Ipoh Signature Bean Sprout is crunchy and the sizes of the bean spout are totally different compared to what we normally buy from other food places or even in other hawker centre in town. I would say, the taste is not that weak. Those sprout beans are actually nice to mixed with their chicken rice as well as to the Prawn Noodle. I would say the usage of MSG (if I am not mistaken) for this part was well controlled.

We also tried their Supreme BBQ Pork Bun and the taste satisfied us. The pork as a filing is tasty and the level of used salt and other condiment perfectly blended with their soft and tasteless white bun. I appreciate the technique on how their chef came up with this great food masterpiece.

As a finisher, both their coffee and lemon tea was absolutely good to end our meal. We also ordered their signature eggs tarts, but we were unlucky that time. Its all sold out. Overall, for me, I think based on the food that we ordered, I would rate it as 7.5 out of 10.

I think their price is quite high... but their tarts are good to try.
