Food Review: Kampung Terengganu

Updated: Sep 7, 2020

In line with the hashtag support local where the team is in, today's food destination is at Kampung Terengganu located at the Ground Floor of Holiday Plaza (one of the oldest shopping malls in Johor Bahru). We also tried their Kampung Terengganu Plentong branch and they serve the same cuisines. This food place provides traditional Terengganu's cuisines in Johor Bahru and its a halal certified café. Lets find out how was the experience:

THE FOOD:

We ordered their famous Terengganu Nasi Dagang, Nasi Lemak, milk teh, fish keropok, and some of their kuihs.

Absolutely, this shop’s signature is their Nasi Dagang. The taste is certified authentic Malaysian cuisine. The gravy that they used is really savoury. The fish curry is suitable to their rice which was cooked in coconut milk and a fenugreek seeds which gives out a unique flavour and fragrance to the entire dish.

The rice was a bit sweetish which is nice in my palates. The aroma of the dish is strong too which is an ideal combination to the entire meal. You can taste the lemon grass, galangal, chilli paste, and turmeric in that gravy. Every scoop of the rice mixed with the fish curry (their own version) was sensational. It was not salty and the usage of condiments (I believe) was not overdone.

They also added some sort of spicy flavour on it. The spicy level is just enough not to overpower the sensational taste of the Nasi Dagang. Other elements they added in this dish (Nasi Dagang) was their own pickled cucumber and carrots.

For the Nasi Lemak, I would say the chicken was awesome. It was very tasty with some crispy elements (I think other herbs). My tatsebuds are enjoying. The rice was well cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaf that gives a great aroma in every bite I took. This Nasi Lemak for me is a certified authentic one.

Other side dish/ appetizer that we also order was keropok which is nice too. It is crispy with a great taste in my palate (referring to the taste of a fish) not much of an MSG (I think). Their kuihs were also great and very satisfying as a finisher to our main meal. Its not to0 sweet and not too sticky which make the texture amazing.

With this experience, I would rate those dish as 10 out of 10 specially their Nasi Dagang. This dish was the first Malaysian cuisine I enjoyed the most when I had the chance to mingle with the community in Kuala Terengganu in 2013.
