Jom with me as we uncover the food wonders of Restoran Khi Ten located at No. 11 Jelan Dedap, Taman Melodies, Johor Bahru.
This is a neighbourhood restaurant serving a wide range of food around Taman Melodies and nearby Tamans like Majidee Park, Kampung Melayu, Southkey, Taman Century, Taman Sentosa and other parts of the City Centre in JB.
It is believed that this shop existed in Johor Bahru for more than 20 years (please correct me if I am wrong). This is actually one of the restaurants in JB where I first explored Chinese Cuisines wayback in 2015—the year I first entered Johor Bahru.
THE FOOD:
We ordered their Honey Lemon Chicken, Fried Rice, Seaweed Soup, Hokkien Mee, Salad Char Kueh, Chicken Wings, and Hong Kong Steamed Fish.
The food discovery to this restaurant (‘Restoran’ in Malay word) was great. They offer different cooking styles for their menus particularly on their live fishes, crabs, prawns.
Their honey lemon chicken is always in our list whenever we get food to their shop for take-out. I love their crispy and tasty chicken specially when dipped to their own version of honey lemon sauce. The combination of the chicken taste and the honey lemon sauce was fantastic in my palate—not to sweet and not to dry.
Their seaweed soup is not salty. The usage of MSG was not too much (I guess). The taste of the seaweed is strong enough which is perfectly blending to their pork broth sprinkled with chopped onion leaves.
Their Hokkien Mee is authentic in terms of taste and texture. The sauce used is just right to their tasteless noodle. They also added crispy pork lard that gives an interesting taste to the whole set. I like every bite of this noodle.
Their Hong Kong steamed fish is superb. We always ask them to not include MSG so to bring out the natural taste of the fish mixed with ginger and other ingredients.
Their salad char kueh is something new to me. I love the crispy texture of their tasteless tofu. It is just nice to mix with mayonnaise. It may be simple but it was absolutely good in my mouth.
Meanwhile, their fried rice for me is a bit salty. I think the strong salt level was coming from their meatloaf. It is tasty but I found a bit salty in my palate which I hope it can be improve in the future.
Overall, I think the food rating is considered high with 8 out of 10 rating (from my side). Most of their menu (which I tried) was recommendable to a friend.
By the way, this shop does various type of cooking method for their live fishes. It can be cooked with asam, Teochew steam, Hong Kong steam, bean sauce, chai poh, deep fried, fried Thai style, sweet & sour, sambal, curry steam/ fried, fragrant fried or fried with black pepper style..
For the cooking method on their live prawns and carbs, it can be cooked in black pepper, spicy, fragrant , Indonesian, cereal, salted baked, sweet and sour, butter, or can even cooked with sambal.
